Camping Holiday Security-

Motorhomes And Caravans

We have already dealt with security for caravans and motorhomes when they are parked up at home. Don’t forget to continue the security theme when you take them on holiday too.

Travelling

Always lock all motorhome doors, both cab and living compartment, regardless of how long you leave the ‘van unattended. Quick but expensive thefts can occur within a matter of seconds.

Caravan doors should be locked before you leave home, and only unlocked when you need access.

Awnings

Never leave valuable items in an awning. Like tents, awnings offer no security at all. Keep valuables locked in the motorhome, or if you have a caravan, the car.

Going Out For The Day?

If you have a campervan/motorhome then there is a good chance that you’ll take it out with you on day trips. Park in busy carparks if you can, preferably under the watchful eye of CCTV cameras. Don’t leave the ‘van unoccupied in isolated locations.

Remove any valuables from view, take as many with you as you can. Use a steering wheel lock if you have one, and make sure that you close and lock all doors and windows before you leave.

If you have a car and a caravan then you have two vehicles to look after. Check that all caravan doors and windows are locked before you leave the campsite. If you have a hitch lock to prevent the caravan being towed away in your absence, then make sure that it is fitted.

When you leave the car, do what you normally would, closing windows and sunroofs, locking the doors properly, removing valuables from view, preferably taking them with you. Park somewhere busy and well seen. Use any additional security products such as steering wheel locks.

Going Out For The Evening?

The same principles apply here as when you are at home. Always make sure that your motorhome or caravan looks occupied.

Close all curtains and blinds to stop anyone looking in.

Battery operated LED lights and lanterns can give the impression that someone’s in when they’re not.

The advantage of battery operated LED lights is that they won’t drain your leisure battery, and LED’s consume minimal amounts of power, so hopefully you should get plenty of lighting time from them.

Don’t ever consider leaving gas lanterns unoccupied though.

Another great product we have found is the TV simulator. This is simply a battery operated device featuring a mix of blue and white LED’s that randomly increase and decrease in brightness, to give the impression that a TV is being watched.

Of course, for both of these lighting products to work, it is important that any light is visible through your curtains or blinds. Have a look after dark when your normal interior lights are on. If you can’t see any light penetrating
